What We Know
In 2019, Sterigenics permanently closed its Willowbrook facility under intense public pressure after the EPA published data showing that people living and working near the plant were 10 times more likely to develop cancer.
Sterigenic’s EtO emissions have made the area surrounding its Willowbrook plant one of the top 20 cancer tracts in the US.
Risks associated with EtO have been known for years, but Sterigenics failed to address them in a timely and appropriate manner.
Settlements
In 2023, the parent company of Sterigenics announced a $408 million settlement of more than 800 lawsuits then-pending against Sterigenics for ethylene oxide exposure.
Unfortunately, new diagnoses of cancer and other illnesses linked to EtO exposure continue to disproportionately impact families in Willowbrook and the surrounding areas. Those individuals and families need high quality representation to seek justice for what has occurred and is not covered under the previous settlement.
